Sanctuary Vineyard Voyage with Kitty Hawk Kites

In Activities, Things To Do In The OBX

It was a beautiful, sunny, 80-degree day in May when we went on the Kitty Hawk Kites Vineyard Voyage Tour with Outer Banks Boat tours. Brian was our friendly captain and was incredibly knowledgeable about the ecosystem, the area islands, and their inhabitants. We boarded the boat at the Kitty Hawk Kites docks in Duck. From there we took about a 20-minute boat ride across the Currituck Sound, passing Dews Island where we saw a herd of wild horses grazing near the water’s edge at the Dews Island Historic Hunting Lodge.

Winding through a maze of peaceful marshy channels, we docked at the Cotton Gin’s boat dock in Jarvisburg where we hopped on an open-air 4-wheel-drive that we took through the pine lined trails to Sanctuary Vineyards. After meandering though fields of vines that would be bursting with grapey goodness in the next few month, we arrived at the winery where we were able to see and hear about the backend operations of wine production.

Our group finally came through the air-conditioned doors into the tasting room, where we were greeted with friendly faces and an inviting table, set with a red and white table cloth and wine glasses that were waiting for the tasty libations to be poured. Our wine aficionado, Elton, was friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines he was serving, and explained that Sanctuary Vineyards specializes in Old World European style wines. Being a fan of dryer wines, I was incredibly impressed with their offerings. Smooth and easy-to-drink wines that would be suitable for a casual dinner with friends or an elegant event.

Feeling happy and satisfied, we loaded back into the 4WD and headed back to the boat to make our way to Duck. Always forward thinking, our captain Brian set a crab trap, because that’s just one of the many advantages of being here in the Outer Banks. Fresh food, great wine, and loads of adventure.  For more information about how you can plan your Outer Banks adventure, go to and talk to one of their reservation specialists.
